10 Macphail "The Flyer" ($59) ☺☺☺☺

The combination of great grapes and a solid winemaker is a marriage made in heaven. In this case the grapes have been lovingly cared for in a well known vineyard and the winemaker is James Macphail, who has already stamped his authority on the American Pinot scene. The wine is beautifully crafted and gives intense cola and cherries on the nose with a  hint of coal and minerals in the background. The palate is full of ripe red fruit, offset by firm tannins and acidity which suggest to me that this well balanced wine should last for some time. We drank it young, but I am sure patience will be rewarded. Yet another stunner from the Macphail stable.
